Committee stage starts on pensions bill

The government's pensions bill has entered the committee stage of its progress in parliament, where the bill will be examined by a group of MPs from a number of parties.

Over three weeks, 12 committee sessions will be held, with discussions between MPs potentially resulting in suggestions of amendments to the bill.

The committee stage of the bill is due to finish on February 8th, with the government continuing to invite input from the general public regarding the proposed reforms.

James Purnell, pensions minister, said: "So far, discussions have focused around the carer's credit and our proposals for reducing the basic state pension to 30 years."

He added that much constructive debate had been had by the committee, with all parties dedicated to making the transformation of the pensions system a success.

The pensions bill had its second reading in the House of Commons on 16th January 2007, where the bill was discussed and scrutinised by MPs and attempts made to forge a consensus on its content.
