DWP: Fewer people taking up pensions
The number of people saving for retirement with pensions has fallen in the UK over the last eight years.
Figures compiled by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) suggest that the percentage of employees with no pension provision has increased from 40 per cent to 45 per cent since 1998-99.
Additionally, 60 per cent of self-employed workers are not saving for retirement, the Edinburgh Evening News reports.
In other pensions news, the DWP revealed last month that protected rights will be made available to holders of self-invested personal pensions from October.
Proposals were also unveiled by the department to make it unlawful for employers to encourage their workers to opt out of workplace pensions.
The changes - which are to be put forward as amendments to the pensions bill - would forbid companies from offering inducements to their employees in order to dissuade them from taking part in company schemes.
