Gardening 'can encourage saving'

Gardening can teach people valuable lessons about personal finances, it has been suggested.

According to research conducted by NS&I, planting seeds is seen by many people as similar to accruing a nest egg, people saving for retirement may be interested to note.

The firm found that 90 per cent of people polled believed that growing plants and flowers is similar to saving as it requires forward planning.

Meanwhile, 92 per cent agreed that in both personal finances and gardening, benefits can only be reaped through patience and regular effort.

For the second year in a row, NS&I is sponsoring the Royal Horticultural Society's Grow Your Own campaign, which aims to encourage UK consumers to grow fruit.

In other news which may be of interest to people saving for their post-work years, Fairinvestment.co.uk recently released the findings of a study which suggested that 39 per cent of Britons do not have a pension scheme set up.
