Government promises "age friendly" reforms

The government has promised that changes to the way housing is built and provided in the UK in years to come will be more "age friendly" than has previously been the case.

With millions of people saving for retirement around the country, the Department for Communities and Local Government has insisted that it will aim to "break the link between old age and dependency".

The pledge as been motivated by the anticipation that elderly people will make up an increasingly large proportion of the overall population and the needs they are likely to have in terms of housing in decades to come.

"Meeting the needs of an ageing population is one of the major challenges we are facing as a society," said housing minister Caroline Flint.

"But whilst it's a big challenge, even a small change or adaption to a home can transform an older person's life," she added.

Last week, the Department for Work and Pensions encouraged younger generations of Britons to start saving for retirement before it is too late for them to achieve financial security in later life.
