L&G urges Brits to start saving

Economic experts from Legal & General (L&G) have urged UK consumers to start setting aside cash into a savings account on a regular basis.

People around the country have become less confident about spending their own money in recent weeks, according to L&G and the financial services firm is keen to see Britons pay more attention to their savings.

The worsening of the UK's spending mood has been prompted by wider economic issues and for many people financial concerns have been accompanied by an increased motivation to save for retirement.

"Now is the time to really think about building a savings plan which could prove invaluable if the recession really takes hold," said Julia Clayworth, L&G's wealth management head of marketing.

"Even saving just a few pounds a month could make all the difference if times get tough."

A recent report from Scottish Widows claimed that retirement savings pots around the country are being drained by grown up children who turn to their parents for financial help.
