More people adding to savings

More people across Britain are adding to their savings accounts than was the case 12 months ago, according to the latest research by Birmingham Midshires.

The financial services firm reports that the proportion of UK consumers setting money aside for their own or for their children's future has risen by around three per cent nationwide over the past year.

While the number of people saving seems to have increased, Birmingham Midshires has noted that economic constraints may have prompted the rise and that the overall value of money being saved has remained constant since early 2007.

Jason Robinson, director of savings operations at Birmingham Midshires, said: "While the economic climate has led to a tightening of budgets amongst households throughout Britain, we are delighted to see that people are getting into the savings habit."

A study by the Axa insurance firm found that four in ten retirees in the UK consider themselves to be "very happy".
