NPSS to "fill gaps" in pension provision

The National Association of Pension Funds has described the proposed National Pension Savings Scheme (NPSS) as a system designed to "fill gaps" in the existing pension system.

It reports that ministers have said that the system is intended to provide a method for those who do not receive employer contributions to save for their retirement, rather than replace the existing system that it says provides better pensions provision.

David Robbins, research and policy manager at the association, said: "You have people that don't have any access to an employer pension and those who aren't saving because they can't be bothered to fill in forms.

"These people will find themselves saving under the NPSS."

In July, independent adviser Which? backed the pensions select committee support for NPSS, stating that it believed that the scheme was the "key" to avoiding a long-term pensions crisis in the UK.
