Pension credit system 'should be made easier'

The pension credit system in the UK should be made easier to understand and access, according to the Age Concern charity.

A spokesperson for the organisation has made clear that while pension credits have helped many thousands of elderly people around the country, more should be done to improve the system of allocation.

Age Concern insists that those who are entitled to credits should be enrolled automatically onto the scheme so that they do not miss out on money that could help them financially during retirement.

The charity's spokesperson said: "Age Concern wants the government to simplify the system and make it easier for older people to claim by paying benefits automatically to those entitled.

"We know that many pensioners are missing out because they find the system confusing, dislike means-testing, are embarrassed about claiming or simply aren't aware that they could claim."

Research by the Alliance Trust recently found that around a quarter of prospective retirees in the UK are making no financial provisions for their later lives.
