People 'working for longer to save for retirement'

People in the UK are working for longer so that they can save up enough money to enjoy their retirement, it has been suggested.

According to Mark Locke, a spokesperson for pensions, protection, investment and advice provider AEGON, traditional retirements are increasingly rare.

He said: "Gone are the days when you reached 65, got your carriage clock and settled in for a sedate retirement. People are living far more active lives, people are far younger now, even in old age."

Mr Locke added that, even after reaching the age of 60 or 65, people can live for a further 30 to 35 years, meaning they spend almost as long in retirement as they did at work.

In other news, an advocate-general at the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg has rejected a claim made by Age Concern that UK rules which permit employers to compel staff members to stop work at or after 65 without compensation breach EU equality requirements.
