People currently saving for retirement may be interested to discover that a protest has taken place demanding a decent state pension for all generations.
The national lobby, which was organised by the National Pensioners Convention (NPC) and more than 15 trade unions, marks the centenary of the state pension.
It called for the basic state pension to be increased above the poverty level for a single pensioner to £151 per week and the link with earnings or prices to be restored.
"This year we have celebrated the centenary of the state pension. It remains a key achievement, but its value has melted away since the link with earnings was ended by the last Conservative government," stated Brendan Barber, general secretary of the Trades Union Congress.
Meanwhile, figures produced by Defaqto earlier this month revealed that 67 per cent of people polled were not confident that any party could resolve the issue of workers not saving enough to fund themselves in retirement.
