Tories highlight retirement charities' Budget reaction

The Conservative party has collated the views of various organisations in relation to chancellor Gordon Brown's Budget announcement this week.

Displaying the views of a number of charities, the Tory statement indicates that Mr Brown could have done more to help pensioners in the UK.

According to the shadow government, the director-general of Age Concern Gordon Lishman said that there will be a number of pensioners who feel frustrated following the chancellor's speech.

He remarked: "The chancellor has bowed out of his final Budget by ignoring the needs of some of the poorest older people, largely the 2.1 million who aren't claiming pension credit."

Frustration could occur in the elderly population "with yet more council tax and water bill rises around the corner", he added.

Meanwhile, Mervyn Kohler from Help the Aged charity said that Mr Brown's failure to mention tackling fuel poverty or offsetting rising energy costs could "consign many older people to yet more scrimping and saving".

During his speech on Wednesday, Mr Brown did announce grants of between £300 and £4,000 for pensioners who install insulation and central heating in their homes.
