Two-thirds 'make no provision for social care'

Two-thirds of people in the UK have no plans to put any money away for the funding of social care in later life, according to Help the Aged.

Research by the older people's charity, along with Carers UK and Counsel and Care, found that family and friends are the people that the majority of older consumers will turn to for help.

This option proved more popular than paying for a private service or local authority support.

Paul Cann, director of policy and external relations at Help the Aged, comments: "The fact that that almost two-thirds of people are expecting help or support from their families or friends should act as an urgent alarm call.

"Reform to the creaking social care system is now vital."

Meanwhile, research carried out by financial services provider Liverpool Victoria suggests that financial markets are set to remain volatile for the coming months, which may interest those examining pensions options.
