World's population 'under-prepared for retirement'

The global population is under-prepared for the financial implications of its retirement, it has been claimed, with less Britons saving than residents of other countries.

Recently published research from Aviva reveals that 60 per cent of pre-retired adults are concerned that they have not saved enough for their pension, while 48 per cent of those already retired feel they should have acted sooner in their life.

Meanwhile, half of US citizens and three-quarters of those from Hong Kong are saving for their retirement, only three in ten Britons are doing the same.

Richard Harvey, group chief executive at Aviva, said: "Our research shows that the pensions black hole is not just a UK-specific issue but an area of global concern."

He added that many adults worldwide now consider that the age of their retirement has become increasingly ambiguous over time.

Last month, a survey from consumer affairs publication Which? Money revealed that a third of Britons are unsure that they will have adequate funds to live on in their retirement.
